Description

Columbia University School of the Arts invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor, or Associate Professor, of Theatre Arts (tenure-track/tenured) in the Faculty of the Arts, or Assistant Professor/Associate Professor of Professional Practice in Theatre in the Faculty of the Arts, effective July 1, 2026.

The Program aims to attract dynamic and dedicated artists with vision, a standing in the profession, a commitment to teaching, service, and an appetite for collaborating across disciplines. The successful candidate will have an active hand in shaping the future of the Directing Concentration and its pedagogy and will work closely with the Directing faculty as well as with the Acting, Dramaturgy, Playwriting, Producing and Stage Management faculty in various ongoing cross-disciplinary initiatives of the Theatre Program. Duties include teaching, advising, and mentoring students throughout their three years in the program, and participating in the admissions process and selection of students.

Candidates for Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Theatre Arts (tenure-track position) must have demonstrated and show promise of the capacity for creative work and the accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure.

Candidates with the rank of Associate Professor of Theatre Arts (tenured position) must have a record of excellence in teaching and be widely recognized for their distinction and professional accomplishment, and demonstrate promise of attaining further distinction.

Candidates for Assistant Professor of Professional Practice must have demonstrated capacity for creative work and exhibit the potential for continuing to make significant contributions to their area of professional practice and accompanying pedagogy.

Candidates for Associate Professor of Professional Practice must have a demonstrated track record of professional success and substantial experience teaching and mentoring students.

Rank and salary commensurate with experience.

The Columbia University School of the Arts offers Masters of Fine Arts Degrees in four disciplines: Film, Theatre, Visual Arts and Writing; a Masters of Arts degree in Film Studies; and undergraduate majors in Creative Writing, Film Studies and Visual Arts.

Qualifications

Minimum Degree Required: Bachelor’s degree
Preferred Degree Required: MFA

  • Candidates for Assistant Professor or Associate Professor of Theatre Arts (tenure-track position) must have demonstrated and show promise of the capacity for creative work and the accompanying pedagogy qualifying them for future nomination to tenure.
  • Candidates with the rank of Associate Professor must have a demonstrated record of professional and teaching achievement and show great promise of attaining distinction in their fields of specialization.
  • Candidates for Assistant Professor of Professional Practice must have demonstrated capacity for creative work and exhibit the potential for continuing to make significant contributions to their area of professional practice and accompanying pedagogy.
  • Candidates for Associate Professor of Professional Practice must have a demonstrated track record of professional success and substantial experience teaching and mentoring students.
