Four Books That Recently Came Our Way

January 13, 2022 by Jan Herman

Here they are with excerpts from each . . .

by Leia John, from Newington Blue Press
REGRETS

Love is something I
always regret;
giving someone
time, energy, and
words on beautifully thick
acid-free paper
that doesn't bleed
under a fountain pen.
Good ink is expensive,
more precious than a
ride on someone's dick.

The dick feels pretty good, though.

by William Cody Maher, from Moloko
There are many uses you can put a body to
You can embrace it
You can discard it
You can shoot it
You can penetrate it
You can punish it
You can just step over it
You can decorate it
You can worship it
You can hide it
You can laugh at it
You can caress it
You can burn it
You can free it
You can scar it
You can play with it ...

by Ira Cohen, from Moloko
I am not a Beat
though I have performed
with them all etc.
I am an Electronic
Multimedia Shaaman,
a Naga Hipster
an Askashic Agent
an Outlaw of the spirit
I am the One out of
a Hundred
I am the Bearded Iris,
the flow of chivalry
with a sword for a leaf
for a lily for a heart,
I am the Rainbow —
a hybrid of celestial hues

by Theo Green, from Inkblot

I went to see Brion one last time. He wanted to show me some ink drawings. they were small; maybe 4 x 6 inches. he had recently unearthed some of these, composed under the influence of psilocybin in 1961 at the Beat Hotel. Having misplaced them until 1984, he had finished a new series of similar ink, gouache & pastel drawings. Of course I wanted to purchase one of each.he wanted $500 each. Yet I was running low on dough. I still had 300 hits of LSD 25 to sell. That would have to wait until London … Brion had been performing with Ramuntcho Matta, and there were some recordings. He was going to do a show on 8 Oct. in Paris with Ramuntcho’s band, opening for Tom Verlaine. He hoped I could make it. (However, I was in Basel, preparing for London, and didn’t get to attend the show.) Brion gives me a signed copy of his newest record: ‘Junk’ and ‘Kick That Habit Man.’ Don Cherry is on this record, as well as Ramuntcho’s group.

I want to hear that record.

When not listening to Bach or Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdes, or dancing to salsa, I like to play jazz piano -- but only in the privacy of my own mind.
