A Silent Empire Against Conciliation

November 9, 2019 by Jan Herman

“… even sweetest lies
(the bright vermillion
of wayward litanies and disbelief)
wear out the bond of trust …”

‘Against Conciliation’ (deformed sonnet) © 2019 by Jan Herman

Postscript: Nov. 18— A staffer points out that “Against Conciliation,” both portrait and poem, reminds him of the “Portrait of I.K.Bonsett: Je suis contre tout et tous” (1921), by an unknown artist, which appeared in the Dadaglobe Reconstructed exhibition at MoMA. That never occurred to me, but I’ll take it.

Have been reading yr Deformed Sonnets book with pleasure and interest. Presented my copy to the Rose Library at Emory University on my recent visit. Who will stumble upon them in coming years?

Richard — Good of you to say. I’ve just learned that Ralf Friel’s Moloko+ will publish a bilingual edition, with the English originals translated into German, and that the book to be designed by Robert Schalinski will combine them with old friend Norman O. Mustill’s brilliant “flypaper” collages. That will appear next year. Meanwhile, the deformed sonnets are available in an updated version (American edition) called “Your Obituary Is Waiting” (English only). It has a few of the collages and comes with two different covers. When I get my hands on author copies, I’ll mail them to you.
