An alarming decision has been made - one that I fear has implications for all of us, even though it is happening in only one community: Atlanta, Georgia. In the May-June, 2004 issue of SYMPHONY magazine, I wrote an article entitled "For Pleasure's Sake." In it, I lamented the disappearance from the repertoire of those pieces of light classical music that seem to have been largely relegated to the world of Pops concerts, even though when they were composed there were no such things as "pops" concerts...
I've been thinking a great deal about music directors recently - and how the position, and the type of person filling it, seems to be evolving. It's an issue that a lot of people are thinking about, and here are three examples that I've observed during my time in the orchestra field:
