Life's A Pitch

For immediate release: the arts are marketable

Back to school

September 7, 2010 by Amanda Ameer

I woke up at 5am today to get on a flight to LA. It really did feel like the first day of school, despite my complete lack of children. I had my not-trying-too-hard plane outfit picked out and everything. The season’s starting, which means many things, including (but not limited to) me having to wear more make-up and fun (free!) CD release events.

I’m en route to the sunnier coast because Nico Muhly has two albums coming out on Decca in a few weeks, and I’m handling the PR for them. [Fairly to moderately unrelated, you can read Nico and me causing trouble (aka “co-blogging”) here and here.] Nico will be speaking about composing on his MacBook Pro and performing at the Apple Store in Santa Monica tomorrow along with the LA Master Chorale, with whom he recorded A Good Understanding. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, come on out and say hello. Nico’s very friendly.

Live at the Apple Store: Nico Muhly

Composer Nico Muhly
and the LA Master Chorale will demonstrate the harmony of the Mac and
live choral performances using Garageband.

Wednesday, September 8, 7pm
Apple Store Third Street Promenade
1248 Third Street Promenade
Santa Monica, CA 90401
(310) 576-1011

It will be fun: techy stuff and the pretty, pretty LA Master Chorale. Both of Nico’s Decca albums, A Good Understanding and I Drink the Air Before Me, come out on September 21.

Meanwhile, back on the New York City ranch, Hilary Hahn, who is also very friendly, is having a CD release affair for her new disc, which also comes out on September 21 (lucky me!). This event takes place at the Housing Works Bookstore Cafe on September 20. This event will be a conversation between her and Jennifer Higdon–her 20th century music history professor at Curtis!–about the concerto Jennifer wrote for Hilary and another concerto by emerging composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky.

Ooh, Nico’s event sounds excellent–but Orlando is nearly as far as you can get from L.A., unfortunately. Will there be any webcast, recording, transcript, etc. available? (My dissertation work is on what people are trying to do when composing music, including especially when using technology.) Have fun!
