Life's A Pitch

For immediate release: the arts are marketable

I’m too busy rolling my eyes dramatically to come up with an entry title

August 3, 2010 by Amanda Ameer

OK, the person who comes up with the best harlequin novel title for this video gets a prize. Bonus points if you submit cover art involving Fabio.

Comment below or e mail me. I really will send you a prize.

Related: has there ever actually been a good classical music video? If you find one, you also get a prize.

This video of Pavarotti singing “Nessun Dorma” with the LA Phil has had 16.5 million views on You Tube, and a few million more in other versions on the site.

It is perhaps not a music video in the sense you mean, and some elites might sneer at Puccini, but the video works in its simplicity. Mehta’s graceful stick technique is an added bonus.
Pavarotti’s singing, of course, is light years beyond Paul Potts’ (Britain’s Got Talent) version which has had 45 million views in various versions on You Tube — so obviously musical quality is a secondary factor in popularity, at least in this case.

Oh, that is just awful: is she auditioning for one of those Real Housewives shows or a remake of “Conan the Barbarian”?
For a reference point, Magdalena Kožená’s Bach video, directed by Ondřey Havelka, was not as painful as most classical music videos and actually enjoyable to watch. It used her recording of Bach’s “Kommt, ihr angefochtnen Sünder” (from the cantata Freue dich, erlöste Schar, BWV 30):

I’m gonna throw my hat in the ring here with this potential harlequin novel title… “Stabled Stallion, Wanton Rider”

I’m not sure this video entirely works but I’m so excited seeing this opera music video thing start to happen! It’s been sporadic and I hope it take because it is a huge part of keeping opera young and fresh.

“The Poor Villager’s Patsy Stone Nightmare”
Now, for best classical music video? Guess that would have to be Fantasia…

I’m obviously a little late to the party (as usual). But I stumbled on to this tonight and thought I’d send it along anyway… “music video” for Steve Reich’s Violin Phase (it needed to be dived into to videos because it’s so long – link to part-1 below)

Another soprano came out with a video a year or so ago…don’t remember her name.
But seriously, I think there is a huge potential for really good classical videos, especially for small ensembles. Even more so if we lose the “concert attire”.
