‘What Is There to Frighten Us?’

October 16, 2024 by Jan Herman

the world’s condition
was never intended
to forego the pleasure
of a passing hope
for no reason
the bullet that
will strike us all
keeps me up at night

all the circles of hell

not yet defined by madness

bury our lives in circus tents

and the black solitude of time

leaks away the hours

what is there
to frighten us
but the curse of ego?

Always have. When I fret I tend to swiftly see the comic and forget the fret. Even in dreams..

Well, ‘the curse of ego’ sure is on display right now…but it is seeming more like a benediction than a curse!! How is this even possible? I find it terrifying; we’re on the brink of dictatorship…

seems the only way to make it impossible is for the voters to say NO! and then a lot of lawyers to fight off the predicted post-election challenges. nothing you don’t already know of course.
      such a TERRIFYING mess!

How is it possible that a tub or is it a ton of lard sticks his hands in a vat of oil soaked french fries greasing his followers taste buds for blatant lies and the sheer antics of his money broker Musk milking the cows being led to slaughter could never have been dreamt up by the maddest surrealist or dadist…

how is it possible? that’s the same question I ask myself. and my answer — the obvious answer — is that the Americans who adore him are little different in their idolatry from the Germans who adored Hitler.

When not listening to Bach or Cuban jazz pianist Chucho Valdes, or dancing to salsa, I like to play jazz piano -- but only in the privacy of my own mind.
