The Artful Manager

Andrew Taylor on the business of arts & culture

My world tour (limited stops)

October 29, 2008 by Andrew Taylor

I’ll be traveling a bit in November to speak at and facilitate some industry conversations. If you’re near Chicago or Dublin, please consider stopping by:

Beyond the Rhetoric and Toward Real Change:
A Symposium on Diversity in Arts and Cultural Organizations
Monday, November 10, 8:00 am – 2:45 pm
Chicago Cultural Center, Chicago, Illinois
hosted by the Cultural Policy Center at the University of Chicago

and the Chicago Department of Cultural Affairs

I’ll be facilitating and moderating this daylong symposium featuring smart and compelling speakers. Our goal is to dig into issues of diversity — among audiences, organizations, boards, and staff — without falling into the usual pit of vague generalities. Should be fun and productive.

New Media, New Audience?
A one day working seminar on the arts, new media and broadcasting
Tuesday, November 25, 9:00 am – 5:30 pm
Dublin Castle, Dublin, Ireland
hosted by the Arts Council of Ireland
This should be a fascinating conversation about ”the ways in which artists and the public are adapting and
adopting new ways of producing, presenting and promoting the arts.” I’m running a session exploring ”The Metaphors We Manage By,” or the particular challenges to traditional business models and strategies in the arts in an increasingly connected (and factured) world. I’ll also be part of the wrap-up panel. I’m also intrigued to see the interplay between the two keynotes: Andrew Keen (author of Cult of the Amateur: How the Internet is killing our culture) and Charles Leadbeater (author of We-think: the power of mass creativity).

Hope to see some of you in Illinois or Ireland…or both.
