Along these same lines, there is at this moment a headline on CNN.com’s front page: “John the Baptist remains found.” Okay, we know what they’re trying to tell us: “John the Baptist’s remains found.” But without the possessive apostrophe and s, it takes on a different meaning. Now, “John the Baptist remains lost” would at least make sense. But saying he remains found is like saying “Water Remains Wet.” It ain’t exactly news, is it?
We had a good headline on Monday August 2 in the Middletown (CT) Press over an article about President Obama’s Iraq War speech – “Obama: The End is Near.” One really did have to read the story to find out if the President was talking about a natural disaster, a religious prophecy or the Democratic majority in the House and Senate.
