Lawrence Dillon: Connecting the Dots

American Festival of Microtonal Music

September 21, 2015 by Lawrence Dillon

We have a afmm_header_bluevery busy week here, with the American Festival of Microtonal Music coming to town. Curated by two of our alumni, the festival has three concerts in three different venues on consecutive nights. My interest in microtonality has been that of one surveying a lovely, distant vista, as opposed to someone tilling the ground in hopes of a harvest. But I love giving my students an opportunity to dig in.

Details, details:

Thursday 24 September – American Festival of Microtonal Music I

UNCSA alumni Johnny Reinhard and Aaron Bachelder curate the AFMM, a force in the new music world since 1981, in music by Violeta Dinescu, Jacob Barton, Richard Carr, Aaron Matthew Bachelder, Igor Stravinsky and Harry Partch.  7:30 pm, New Winston Museum.

Friday 25 September – American Festival of Microtonal Music II

Second concert in the AFMM includes music by Harry Partch, John Cage, Skip, LaPlante, Igor Stravinsky, Olivier Messiaen and Johnny Reinhard.  7:30 pm, Green St. Church.

Saturday 26 September – American Festival of Microtonal Music III

The festival concludes with music by Michael Vick, Harry Partch, John Cage, Dan Sedgwick, Ryan Stickney, Georg Friedrich Haas and Johnny Reinhard.  7:30 pm, Brendle Recital Hall.
