goldenratiospiralScholars have long argued about the properties of the Golden Ratio (1.618) as applied to music, some finding evidence in everything from folk music to contemporary compositions. Many cite the occurrence of musical climaxes, both micro and macro, at .618 of the way through phrases, sections and entire compositions.

.618 of the way through the concert season and the academic calendar falls sometime within the month of February, depending on your start and finish dates. Given that February is the shortest month, in which it seems the same amount of activity has to be compressed into a truncated time frame, this month can have a level of intensity designed to increase blood pressure and decrease patience.

I should know. I pride myself on maintaining an even keel, but even I’ve had a few regrettable exchanges in recent weeks. Between weather issues, illnesses, and the pitch of intensity at this time of year, I’ve not been as mild-mannered as I would like.

Helps to blame it on Fibonacci.
