Scott Timberg on Creative Destruction

Happy Birthday, Billie Holiday

April 7, 2015 by Scott Timberg

TODAY would be the 100th birthday of one of the greatest musicians in history.

I’ve been watching this 1957 video of “Fine and Mellow” for more than 20 years now and continue to love it.

There are so many great musicians on this track, but let me point out that Holiday’s greatest-even musical partner Lester Young, plays tenor saxophone here. The melancholy and understated saxophonist may be my all-time favorite musician, and his late-’30s recordings with her are simply peerless. (Young also gave Holiday her famous nickname.)220px-Billie_Holiday,_Downbeat,_New_York,_N.Y.,_ca._Feb._1947_(William_P._Gottlieb_04251)

For now, a happy 100th to Lady Day.

I'm a longtime culture writer and editor based in Los Angeles; my book "CULTURE CRASH: The Killing of the Creative Class" came out in 2015. My stories have appeared in The New York Times, Salon and Los Angeles magazine, and I was an LA Times staff writer for six years. I'm also an enthusiastic if middling jazz and indie-rock guitarist. Culture Crash

Here is some information on my book, which Yale University Press published in 2015. (Buy it from Powell's, here.) Some advance praise: With coolness and equanimity, Scott Timberg tells what in less-skilled hands could have been an overwrought horror story: the end of culture as we have known … [Read More...]
