That’s very nice — Allen is a good player, and the Visby Band is pretty good.

I’ll catch hell for this, but neither the soloist nor the orchestra is up to the version by Rob’s own band the Boss Brass with Guido Basso featured on flugelhorn. THAT was a musical marriage made in heaven. (Well, Toronto, actually).

One could prove it for oneself if you find the original, which came out on LP as Palo Alto Records PA 8074, and released on CD as Seabreeze CDSB 105.

Guido’s been “offline” for a bit (had a quadruple bypass a month or so back), but he’ll be playing again soon, and will reconstitute the Boss Brass with Rick Wilkins and Brian Barlow for a special one-time concert at Koerner Hall in Toronto on October 18, 2014. It’ll be great, as it isn’t any kind of a ghost band, but every chair will be played by a veteran of the band…

Yes! BUT – Jan Allan is still very, very, very, very, very special in his own right…
