Bill Evans redeems the piano from Bierce’s and Shaw’s disdain in this video clip, made in Norway in August of 1980 when Evans was mortally ill and undoubtedly knew it. Thanks to Jan Stevens of The Bill Evans Web Pages for finding it. The bassist and drummer are Marc Johnson and Joe LaBarbera.

How tough it must be for Bill Evans, the still-living-and-working saxophonist, to hear his name everywhere and know that it’s not him they’re talking about.
Thanks for the mention of the “Your Story” clip. In reality, there are a few better performances by the trio of this impeccably-written tune, such as the one on the “Consecration” box set. (That one absolutely fractures me with its precision and passion. Marc Johnson is so tuned in to Bill’s every nuance that it’s absolutely scary.) This one on my site, though, is the only version on video, as far as I know. The exception is a version from the “Merv Griffin Show” in 1980, a poor-quality excerpt that appears on a documentary done in 1996 in Italy.
Every young pianist needs to carefully listen to Bill Evans and his use of space and harmony. No flashy runs (even though his chops were amazing) just the accent on working the melody. When giants like Bill die it leaves a huge gap in the musical scene,no matter how many albums he left us with.
I saw the performance of “Your Story” on TV live when it happened on Merv Griffin.A great moment on TV and a gutsy move by Merv to bring him on.You’ll never see something like that on network TV these days.
Oh, and Bill Evans the sax player is doing just fine. He’s a major Draw in Europe and Japan and has been for years. He’s also a Bad Cat!
Peace,
Jason
