The presence of flute, oboe, viola and double bass reminds me of the Planets. Of course all the rest is quite different.

KG replies: Yeah, it did feel pretty familiar, but that’s what the commission was for. But I jumped at the chance to write for harp and accordion, two instruments I love; and I’ve been waiting for decades to write for accordion. Fell in love with it listening to the early Relache recordings with Guy Klucevsek.

Here in Finland we have quite a few excellent accordionists who play new music and are always on the lookout for new pieces and composers. There’s even one who plays a quarter tone-accordion! I will let them know that your interested in writing for the accordion, and show them your new septet.

KG replies: Thanks, Juhani. I’ll also fly to Helsinki at the drop of a hat, if anybody has a hat.

Good to see the bass is ‘laying it down’ – as they say in jazz

KG replies: In my music, always.
