    About Sarah Michelson

    BIOGRAPHY

    Sarah Michelson's work has been presented in New York by Performance Space 122, The Kitchen, Danspace Project at St. Mark's Church, Movement Research at the Judson Church and Movement Research’s Improvisation Festival/NY, and by the New Performance Gallery and Dancers Group (San Francisco), Die Pratze Dance Festival (Tokyo), La Porta (Barcelona) and Chisenhale Dance Space (London).  Michelson's work, The Experts, was commissioned by Baryshnikov's White Oak Dance Project and toured with the company (2002). Internationally, her work has most recently been presented by The Cutting Edge Festival, Frankfurt, Germany; The Venice Biennale, Italy; SommerSzene, Salzburg, Austria; Tanz im August Festival, Berlin; Germany and the Zuercher Theater Spektakel, Zurich, where she received the Der Foerder prize Zurich for best work presented at the festival.

    Sarah Michelson current multi-part project Daylight has received production support from The National Dance Project and The Creation Fund of The National Performance Network with co-commissioners Performance Space 122 and The Walker Art Center.  The final part of the project is co-produced by The Brooklyn Academy of Music’s Next Wave Festival 2006. The Lyon Opera Ballet commissioned a new work, Love is Everywhere by Michelson that premiered in May 2005. In 2005, Daylight premiered at PS 122 in June.  The Walker Art Center in Minneapolis has commissioned Michelson to create a work for the opening the 05-06 season in the center’s newly expanded building.  In October, the project will tour to On the Boards in Seattle.

    Sarah Michelson won an unprecedented second consecutive New York Dance and Performance "Bessie" Award for her work Shadowmann (2003). In 2002, she won a "Bessie" Award for her work, Group Experience (2001), the work that prompted Baryshnikov’s commission. She has received funding from the DNA Project, a program of Arts International, made possible through the generous support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Her work is currently supported by Altria Group, Inc., The Jerome Foundation, New York Foundation for the Arts’ BUILD Program. Past awards include The Fund for U.S. Artists at International Festivals and Exhibitions, Arts International; a Joyce Soho Space Grant; an Artist-in-Residence at Movement Research and at Chashama Inc. in New York City; and creative residencies at Lexington Center for the Arts, Lexington, NY, and in Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan.

    Current and past works include: Daylight 2005, Shadowmann 2003, Grivdon at The Grivdon Lawn: Jacobs Pillow Dance Festival, 2002, Grivdon at The Grivdon Concrete; The Kitchen, 2002; Group Experience, PS 122.

    Sarah is the associate curator of dance at The Kitchen (NYC) and teaches dance and yoga on a regular basis. She was a performance curator at Dixon Place (1997-2000) and is a member of PS 122’s Artist Advisory Board. Sarah was the Associate Director of Movement Research from 1997 -2000 and editor-in-chief of its Performance Journal from 1995 - 2003.  Sarah Michelson was born in Manchester, UK, trained at the Laban Centre, London, IPC and Merce Cunningham Studio, NYC and received her MFA in Fiction Writing from Mills College, CA.
