Dispatch from the East: Calcium Light Night And The Morning Snow

Fade to white…

I don’t know how many of you know Charles Ives’s work “Calcium Light Night,” which refers to what is also known as a carbide light, or in the theater as a limelight, but last night walking home from the train was quite a trip, with the heavy snow and deserted surroundings.

After having had the truly great pleasure of hearing hockey legend Mark Messier speak at an Aspen Institute event about leadership, and more importantly, about what needs to be done to ensure that youth sports remain centered in what’s good for children (developmentally appropriate), as opposed to the trend toward being a super amped, highly-competitive environment mirroring professional sports, I trudged my way home from New York City to Maplewood, New Jersey.
I took a few pictures of the trip last night, and one from this morning, right upon sunrise.

This is the trail from the Maplewood train station…

That’s correct, you’re seeing trails of snow, captured by the flash on my iPhone.
