T. Oliver Reid, Co-Founder & Artistic Director of the Black Theatre Coalition and faculty at NYU-Tisch’s Grad Acting Program and Columbia University School of the Arts’ Grad Acting program, shares the important work of the Black Theatre Coalition.
I am left with the question of how can we change the level of collaboration on the grass roots level so we change the community from the ground up? Tisch has a ton of money. Broadway is a ton of money. But the key connection and development opportunities between are truly available only white kids with tons of their parents’ money.
The VAST majority of working artists are not able to go directly to the dream-world of Tisch and are not just given a dream job on Broadway. The vast majority are everyday working artists who need some kind of backpack to survive those key years of developing their craft at small to midsize theaters. And these theaters may be the most open to new ideas and change.
