Public Art, Public Space

5×5 Returns to Washington, DC in September

February 21, 2014 by Glenn Weiss

5x55 Curators, 25 Artists, 8 Wards, 16 Weeks, 1 Cultural Capital
Transforming the District with Public Art

Congrats on the DC Commission for bringing back 5×5.  $500K is an excellent local and national contribution to the temporary public art.

I HAVE A BIG COMPLAINT from 2012 that is still present on the 2014 website.  Why don’t they have a simple online way to see pictures of the art?  Great mapping tools and bios of curators, but they just need a gallery of images.  HOW DO I KNOW WHERE I WANT TO GO?  All the artist links from 2012 are broken.

DC Commission – If you don’t want to post a gallery – then use FLICKR.   Your FACEBOOK page could have albums for each Curator and the Artist Works.  Here is one of the few 2012 images I could find through the 5×5 social media sites.

5×5 – A Project of the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.   The city will once again commission 25 temporary public art installations in all eight Wards as part of the 5×5 project.

Five curators — Lance Fung, Shamim M. Momin, Stephanie Sherman, Justine Topfer and A.M. Weaver — will work with five artists “to create five bodies of public work,” according to a release from the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

The curators will manage and oversee each artist’s concept, budget and schedule. The DCCAH Public Art Committee, a four-member selection committee, chose these curator’s proposals from more than 25 submissions. The installations will range in duration, but will not exceed four months. The installations will be unveiled and showcased during September – December, 2014.
