I believe the new NAJP should do three things: train working journalists, publicize excellent arts writing and protect the assets of the old NAJP. (Whatever happened to the first three years of the journal?) I'm a freelance writer and performer living in Athens, Ga. I was in the second year of NAJP after eight years as music critic of the Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, during which I also hosted an alternative-rock show on one of the local NPR member stations. After NAJP I spent a year as editor of CD Review and five as music producer of NPR's "Performance Today." So I've worked in print and broadcasting, as well as with arts groups directly. This year I've performed a dozen concerts with the Baltimore Symphony and am consulting for the Augusta Symphony. We've got a lot of energy and a lot of good ideas, and we do fine work. Let's create an organization that can help others do the same.
