Smooth jazz vs. hard jazz in Times Square

Spyro Gyra, Al Jarreau, Tuck and Patti (pleasant entertainment for nice people) at Nokia Theatre — or New England Conservatory’s jazz gala (serious improv from jam band keybrdist John Medeski, singer Dominique Eade, et at.) at B.B. King’s? My new City Arts column explores jazz polarities in NYC this weekend. Something for everybody, waddya want?

You are very fortunate to have so much access to jazz and live music in New York City. So much diversity. Great!

HM: Yes Jorge, I do count myself lucky on those counts, and I love the access, but I got myself here so I could partake of this music and have worked for 35 years to stay here and make the most of it. So it’s not *all* luck.
