Yusef Lateef: “Be sincere. Seek knowledge. There is so much to under- stand with our minds, eyes and ears, so many wonderful parts of existence. That is life itself.” Lateef, tenor saxophone and Adam Rudolph, percussion, with the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra listening; photo by Frank Stewart.

Muhal Richard Abrams: “Chicago’s uniqueness in allowing individuals to pursue their own goals without criticism was great. . . This award is important for how it reflects respect for the spectrum of different approaches, so many different expressions of individualism.” Abrams conducting the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra in “2000 Plus the Twelfth Step,” January 12 2010; photo by Frank Stewart.
