{"id":2636,"date":"2023-05-26T22:59:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-27T02:59:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/uq\/?p=2636"},"modified":"2023-05-26T22:59:12","modified_gmt":"2023-05-27T02:59:12","slug":"einsamkeit-bass-trombone-piano-dancers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/uq\/2023\/05\/einsamkeit-bass-trombone-piano-dancers.html","title":{"rendered":"&#8220;Einsamkeit&#8221; = Bass Trombone + Piano + Dancers"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Dave Taylor playing Schubert\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Nfjj5frL0cQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">David Taylor plays Schubert&#8217;s &#8220;Doppelganger&#8221;<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>My new \u201cEinsamkeit\u201d concoction, setting songs by Mahler and Schubert, premieres June 17 (7:30 pm) and 18 (3 pm) at the KnJ Theater near Union Square.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m collaborating with the singular bass trombonist David Taylor (\u201cKiller!\u201d \u2013 NY Times), Igal Perry (a choreographer who really knows music), and Igal&#8217;s Peridance  Contemporary Dance Company (which is celebrating its fortieth anniversary season).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The centerpiece is Taylor\u2019s rendition of Schubert\u2019s \u201cDoppelganger\u201d \u2013 a version harrowing and virtuosic in equal measure, known and feared by all bass trombonists.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other songs we adapt are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mahler: Wenn mein Schatz Hochzeit macht<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schubert: Die Stadt<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schubert: Nebensonnen (which Taylor SINGS!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schubert: Der Leiermann (which Igal may dance)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>David Taylor and I began playing Schubert songs together in my apartment decades ago. We had earlier played through the Beethoven cello sonatas (which David sight-read). One day I was struck with the realization that Taylor could do some real damage with late Schubert. &#8220;Doppelganger&#8221; felt especially lethal. He first performed it in Vienna at the Musikverein. It worked. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cEinsamkeit\u201d begins with solo Bach, performed by cellist Nan-Cheng Chen, choreographed by Igal Perry.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tickets <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peridancecontemporary.org\/einsamkeit\">here<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(David Taylor and I next perform &#8220;Einsamkeit&#8221; (sans dancers) at the Brevard Music Festival on July 6.
