In collaboration with the Indonesian\nEmbassy, the PostClassical Ensemble\u2014one of the most innovative and stimulating\ngroups around\u2014traced the intricate connections between Java, Bali, and the\nWest. . . . Lou Harrison\u2019s colossal Piano Concerto from 1985 . . . &nbsp;was the piece I was most eager to hear, its\nopening movement as vast as a canyon, the second filled with nimble virtuosity,\nthe slow movement an extended prayer that gives way to a fleet finale. . . . How\ncould so magnificent a concerto be so woefully neglected?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThese days, the word&nbsp;<em>fusion\n. . . <\/em>has become a clich\u00e9. But here was a vivid, persuasive argument in\nfavor of embracing a fluid world culture. Works of the imagination should not\nbe limited by borders, or by walls, and when art is born out of reverence, we\nthe public should not be impeded by questions of ownership and accusations of\nappropriation.
