{"id":626,"date":"2015-03-01T13:43:45","date_gmt":"2015-03-01T18:43:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/?p=626"},"modified":"2015-03-01T13:43:45","modified_gmt":"2015-03-01T18:43:45","slug":"music-schools-in-transition-iv-i","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/2015\/03\/music-schools-in-transition-iv-i\/","title":{"rendered":"Music Schools in Transition, IV.i"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>First in this post, I must let NASM (National Association of Schools of Music), the accrediting organization off the hook.\u00a0 I suggested that they need to change their guidelines to allow for necessary changes in the bachelor of music in performance.\u00a0 I reread my NASM Handbook and was pleased to find that there is considerable flexibility within accreditation guidelines.\u00a0 Sadly I realized that the reason almost all U.S. degrees programs look alike redounds to the faculty and leaders who created them.\u00a0 I suppose it&#8217;s understandable that over time we emulate each other.<\/p>\n<p>I received a number of questions from colleagues about what components must be included in the B.M. in Performance.\u00a0 One specific question involved whether there must be a piano department in order to be accredited.\u00a0 When I answered, no, the questioner said, &#8220;well, I suppose you have to have a piano department, so there will be accompanists for recitals.&#8221; &#8211; now there&#8217;s a good reason for a piano department!<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/book.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/book.jpg\" alt=\"book\" width=\"180\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 If that&#8217;s its reason for existing, I wouldn&#8217;t expect any aspiring young pianists to want to study there.<\/p>\n<p>As schools will need to both cut budgets and enhance their strengths and profiles, they may want to assess whether there are entire departments or divisions that could be eliminated.\u00a0 I&#8217;m not suggesting piano, per se, but simply making the case that there are, in every school I know, weak departments and programs that could meet my standards for elimination.<\/p>\n<p>I also combed the NASM Handbook for the words, orchestra, band, wind ensemble, chorus, etc.\u00a0 I only found the word,\u00a0 ensemble, and was delighted.\u00a0 This can give visionary leaders flexibility to imagine ensemble configurations and plans that are more suitable to today&#8217;s (and tomorrow&#8217;s) professional environment.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>First in this post, I must let NASM (National Association of Schools of Music), the accrediting organization off the hook.\u00a0 I suggested that they need to change their guidelines to allow for necessary changes in the bachelor of music in performance.\u00a0 I reread my NASM Handbook and was pleased to find that there is considerable [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[1],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-626","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-uncategorized","7":"entry"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/626","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=626"}],"version-history":[{"count":5,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/626\/revisions"}],"predecessor-version":[{"id":635,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/626\/revisions\/635"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=626"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=626"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=626"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
