{"id":579,"date":"2014-05-27T12:27:14","date_gmt":"2014-05-27T16:27:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/?p=579"},"modified":"2014-05-27T12:27:14","modified_gmt":"2014-05-27T16:27:14","slug":"arts-entrepreneurship-a-story-part-iii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/2014\/05\/arts-entrepreneurship-a-story-part-iii\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts Entrepreneurship, A Story, Part III"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/book.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-575\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/05\/book.jpg\" alt=\"book\" width=\"180\" height=\"121\" \/><\/a>My students have a penchant for ignoring market feasibility for their projects.\u00a0 From my observations and experience with them, I have found that they tend to fall in love with their ideas and when involved in market feasibility study, can ignore, or not hear the most potent data and feedback.\u00a0 My challenge for my venture was to avoid this apparent emerging arts entrepreneur syndrome.<\/p>\n<p>My first calculation was to assess (again) what my intent was in creating and maintaining the site.\u00a0 I found that all I really wanted to reap in terms of revenue was to cover my costs, both initial and ongoing.\u00a0 What would be more important to me would be my reach, i.e. how many members and readers I would engage.<\/p>\n<p>I teach my students to employ 3 methods of market feasibility: research of existing data, a survey instrument and direct human interaction.\u00a0 I used two of these: data and direct human interaction.\u00a0 The data I analyzed was my blog readership, my social networks and 2 years of email.\u00a0 I found sufficient evidence in these areas to encourage me to move forward.\u00a0 I then interviewed a variety of colleagues, former and present students.\u00a0 I asked them to react to the idea, to its proposed structure and pricing.\u00a0 My encouragement from my data was supported by these interviews.\u00a0 (Ideally the interviews would have been conducted by a neutral third party).\u00a0 Since my goals for membership and readership are modest, I did not find it crucial to run a survey questionnaire.<\/p>\n<p>What was most interesting to me were those conversations about pricing and membership.\u00a0 I found that people are tired of renewable memberships &#8212;
