{"id":390,"date":"2011-05-09T10:34:30","date_gmt":"2011-05-09T17:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp\/2011\/05\/arts_entrepreneurship_class_pr\/"},"modified":"2011-05-09T10:34:30","modified_gmt":"2011-05-09T17:34:30","slug":"arts_entrepreneurship_class_pr","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/2011\/05\/arts_entrepreneurship_class_pr\/","title":{"rendered":"Arts Entrepreneurship Class Progress"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211;following up on my promise to keep interested readers up-to-date on my class, Arts Entrepreneurship.&nbsp; Recall that I posed 2 major assignments.&nbsp; The first of these was to identify an existing arts organization, study it deeply, then pose one expanded program and one new one.&nbsp; The second of these was to write\/create a business plan for a new venture.<\/p>\n<p>For the first assignment students were grouped according to arts interest area (visual arts, literary arts, dance, music, theatre).&nbsp; For the second assignment students were given the option to work individually or in groups.<\/p>\n<p>The first assignments were presented last week in class and exceeded my already-high expectations.&nbsp; The ideas were canny and fresh, the plans realistic.&nbsp; The only area that lacked (understandably because of the secondary nature of the assignment) was feasibility.&nbsp; In the discussion that followed presentations, it became clear to all of us that arts organizations rarely conduct in-depth and revelatory feasibility studies.&nbsp; We referenced our work and internship experiences in drawing this conclusion.&nbsp; I had to admit that I had participated, in fact initiated a number of programs without seriously addressing feasibility<\/p>\n<p>The second assignment took what should have been an expected turn.&nbsp;&nbsp;I had advised that perhaps students&#8217; greatest need in imagining and forming a new venture would be their lack of knowledge of their chosen field.&nbsp; This has proven to be so, and as such, in some cases students will not develop a full business plan, but a deep research dive into the field in which they plan to build their plans.<\/p>\n<p>An interesting (and scary) proposal comes from the only team to tackle the final assignment.&nbsp; They want to form a summer festival site that will feature classical music, drama and theatre.&nbsp; My first reaction was to say no to this idea, as there are so many of these models now being challenged by changing audience preferences, etc., but then I thought better of it.&nbsp; In studying existing models, those successful and those less-than-successful, these students will truly learn the many elements involved in entrepreneurship.&nbsp; <\/p>\n<p>I&#8217;ll make one final post on the class &#8212; in June, after final projects are presented.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8211;following up on my promise to keep interested readers up-to-date on my class, Arts Entrepreneurship.&nbsp; Recall that I posed 2 major assignments.&nbsp; The first of these was to identify an existing arts organization, study it deeply, then pose one expanded program and one new one.&nbsp; The second of these was to write\/create a business plan [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":3,"featured_media":0,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"_genesis_hide_title":false,"_genesis_hide_breadcrumbs":false,"_genesis_hide_singular_image":false,"_genesis_hide_footer_widgets":false,"_genesis_custom_body_class":"","_genesis_custom_post_class":"","_genesis_layout":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[4],"tags":[],"class_list":{"0":"post-390","1":"post","2":"type-post","3":"status-publish","4":"format-standard","6":"category-main","7":"entry"},"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/390","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/post"}],"author":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/users\/3"}],"replies":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/comments?post=390"}],"version-history":[{"count":0,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/posts\/390\/revisions"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=390"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"category","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/categories?post=390"},{"taxonomy":"post_tag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/state\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/tags?post=390"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
