{"id":117,"date":"2011-06-09T07:55:12","date_gmt":"2011-06-09T12:55:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/speaker\/?p=117"},"modified":"2011-06-09T07:55:12","modified_gmt":"2011-06-09T12:55:12","slug":"things-heat-up-at-the-league-of-american-orchestras-conference","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/speaker\/2011\/06\/things-heat-up-at-the-league-of-american-orchestras-conference\/","title":{"rendered":"Things heat up at the League of American Orchestras&#8217; conference"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Yesterday morning, more than 800 delegates to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.americanorchestras.org\">League of American Orchestras&#8217; <\/a>2011 conference in Minneapolis-Saint Paul gathered for &#8220;Red Alert,&#8221; a 90+ minute plenary session that framed the critical issues facing American orchestras and proposed solutions. \u00c2\u00a0Jesse Rosen, the League&#8217;s president, began by putting a stake in the ground, stating that the current problems faced by many (not all) orchestras cannot be attributed to the economy but instead are symptomatic of underlying trends and conditions that have been brewing for decades. \u00c2\u00a0It is time, Rosen said, \u00c2\u00a0to &#8220;face our brutal truths.&#8221; \u00c2\u00a0Here is his diagnosis:<\/p>\n<p><strong>1 &#8211; Declining revenues and rising costs. <\/strong> Orchestras&#8217; share of corporate, foundation, and individual gifts is down sharply. \u00c2\u00a0Fewer tickets are being sold per household. \u00c2\u00a0Audiences are moving away from subscriptions. \u00c2\u00a0Fixed costs (labor, occupancy) are rising.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2 &#8211; Donor fatigue<\/strong>. \u00c2\u00a0Donors &#8212; individuals, foundations, and corporations &#8212; at the local and national level are telling us that until fundamental issues of the field are addressed, they are unwilling to invest.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3 &#8211; Commitment to performance excellence is not enough. <\/strong> Striving to attain world-class performance levels is no longer enough to assure that orchestras&#8217; case for support is strong. \u00c2\u00a0Orchestras must find new ways to relate to and serve their communities in order to attract and retain support philanthropic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>4 &#8211; Stagnant product delivery systems.<\/strong> Too many orchestras are stuck in the two-hour, evening, subscription concert format and there is \u00c2\u00a0insufficient experimentation with other ways to bring music to listeners. \u00c2\u00a0Orchestras are too absent from electronic media.<\/p>\n<p><strong>5 &#8211; Lack of diversity and its effect on our case for support and our long-term prospects for vitality. <\/strong>Despite our efforts, orchestras and their boards, staff, musicians and audiences remain overwhelming white at a time of increasing diversity in the American population.<\/p>\n<p>What to do?
