And yet, here we are again, talking about war. Only this time, it&#8217;s not just me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/scenechange\/2024\/02\/27\/war-is-coming-you-ready\/\">February 27<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/scenechange\/2024\/03\/05\/nonprofit-arts-leaders-one-final-note-about-the-upcoming-war\/\">March 5<\/a> of this year, we published two consecutive articles about the inevitable war that will start within the next six years. Unfortunately for all of us, that timetable may be on the optimistic side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last month, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/09\/21\/politics\/video\/smerconish-commentary-2024-election-wwiii-digvid\">Michael Smerconish of CNN<\/a> quoted a September 16, 2024 article from Walter Russell Mead of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/opinion\/u-s-shrugs-as-world-war-iii-approaches-devastating-bipartisan-report-716bda71?reflink=desktopwebshare_permalink\">Wall Street Journal<\/a> (which is paywalled), entitled \u201cU.S. Shrugs as World War III Approaches.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THE U.S. SHRUGS AS WWIII APPROACHES. That doesn\u2019t mean that they\u2019re not participating in other people\u2019s wars. Also, in the US, we have our own issues: <a href=\"https:\/\/healthjournalism.org\/blog\/2024\/02\/nearly-43000-people-died-from-gun-violence-in-2023-how-to-tell-the-story\/\">over 40,000 gun murders per year<\/a> is one of them (almost 43,000 in 2023). We don\u2019t have to be in a war to kill our own people. Seems as though we do a pretty good job of it on our own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But back to Mead:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cThe bipartisan report details a devastating picture of political failure, strategic inadequacy, and growing American weakness in a time of rapidly increasing danger. The U.S. faces the \u2018most serious and most challenging\u2019 threats since 1945, including the real risk of \u2018near-term major war.\u2019 The report warns: \u2018The nation was last prepared for such a fight during the Cold War, which ended 35 years ago. It is not prepared today.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>And as we wrote back in February, anticipating a war by 2030:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cNothing is really as unprecedented as the media or your conspiracy theorist brother-in-law would have you believe. If you\u2019re in the nonprofit arts business and think the art you produce is not subject to these cycles, think again. All signs point to war. Everything that has led up to every \u2018war to end all wars\u2019 is happening right now. Worldwide populism movements choosing narcissistic, autocratic leadership. Eliminating democratic principles in lieu of safety. Choosing up sides. Mistrust of elections. Hatred of government. Groups determining who is \u2018us\u2019 and who is \u2018them.\u2019 Fear, peddled 24 hours a day on various media, both legitimate and phony. The belief in lies and \u2018truthiness.\u2019 All this has happened before \u2013 just before all-out war. We\u2019re due, sometime between now and 2030.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I had hoped that I was wrong. Others just believed I had gone off the deep end. A couple of arts leaders who don\u2019t agree with our assessment that most of the nonprofit arts industry in the United States fails to live up to its responsibility as charitable \u2014 and because of that active repugnance toward their communities, organizations have seen their financial resources dwindle \u2014 argued that talking about a war was ludicrous.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At what point does a responsible arts leader turn their head away from what is going on around the world and choose not to do anything about it? They\u2019re already turning their head away from what is going on in their own backyard, after all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What sacrifices will you make when the war includes your own country directly? Given that you\u2019ve likely never been asked to sacrifice anything for the sake of your art, what\u2019s your plan? What do you mean, you don\u2019t have a plan?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What are you going to do? That\u2019s overwhelming. It\u2019s so overwhelming, in fact, that the combined forces of the world won\u2019t stop it from coming. So what\u2019s a lowly arts organization, one that has already proven unworthy of funding because it lacks the ability to follow the guidelines of the IRS in producing charitable activities, supposed to do when all attention (and money) will be devoted elsewhere?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As stated in previous columns, there is not one arts leader in America alive that was also leading an arts organization \u2014 community or commercial \u2014 during the last World War. There are stories and learned history about how the people sacrificed and worked together across party lines to help the war effort. Howard Miller &#8211; U.S. National Archives and Records Administration, Public Domain)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t forget that before the war, this same generation survived a years-long depression in which regular families had <em>already<\/em> learned to sacrifice for each other while the ultra-wealthy became richer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But those are not the leaders we have now. The only thing we have in common with that era is that the ultra-wealthy were able to pit races and ethnicities against each other so that no one would team up to gain power over them. (The lesson, then and now: brown people <em>bad. <\/em>Jews, too.) They\u2019re still pretty good at pitting us against each other. Think again<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s no easy answer. But we\u2019re pretty sure that \u201cnothing\u201d is not among your choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s start with the election on November 5. Americans are already voting. I\u2019ve completed my ballot, for example, and mailed it in. I\u2019ve tracked it online and it has arrived. But I live in Washington, which, like Oregon, has 100% mail-in voting. With no problems and high turnout, incidentally. Where do you live? And will any of it matter to you <em>after <\/em>the election?
