I grew very fond of a DG recording of the three Schumann, Opus 41, paired with the three Brahms, titles, either from the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/artist\/0lKtzF4ocJKLhHVeBuCo2A\">Melos\u00a0Quartet<\/a>. Same with Alban Berg Quartett. Rifling through the spotify database, both these acts have oddly\u00a0missing titles, including Schumann&#8230; TWO <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/0Tc5rtwSOwii0n62w6nYXF\">editions<\/a> of the Melos for the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/0PiZpNomPcTSwV6KpHydFZ\">Schubert C Major Quintett (with Rostropovich)<\/a>, a <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/50VfDZe5RXb7zKXn8Vfgee\">Berg Teldec compilation<\/a>, but no Schumann from either. (Looks like the DG licensed the Melos Schumann\/Brahms package to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.discogs.com\/Brahms-Schumann-Melos-Quartett-The-String-Quartets\/release\/9670362\">Newton Classics<\/a>.) So I did some scouring, thinking surely a Masterworks Juilliard recording would get a hit, which it did, the celebrated <a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/379ctEPQ22sQem3aZUNjdJ\">1969 recording<\/a>\u00a0with the piano Quartet and Quintet, with Glenn Gould (Opus 47) and Leonard Bernstein (Opus 44) on keybs (both very fine). But then, whoa: no actual string quartets, JUST the piano material. (Even more peculiar, a live Juilliard\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/4hRLQWubek5IAY2k89mL2f\">Library of Congress Schumann<\/a> set shows up.) Seriously? &#8220;What kind of MONSTER puts artisanal butter in the FREEZER,&#8221; as Erlich Bachmeister says. Sure, we&#8217;ll lease spotify the rights to stream the Schumann PIANO chamber works, but when it comes to those Opus 41s, somebody&#8217;s gonna have to PONY UP BIG.<\/p>\n<p>Lucky for us, Youtube fills such patches, and a new favorite ensemble, the Quatuor\u00a0Eb\u00e9ne, plays the 41\/3 more exquisitely than I remember even Melos doing:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iO4UhZuw7gQ\" width=\"700\" height=\"435\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>How much does your early exposure to a given piece influence your understanding of the music?
