Bishop founded the Origin label in Seattle in 1997, and by the fall of 2000 the three veteran Pacific Northwest musicians had combined in a group that has released six records on Origin.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft  wp-image-9706\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/61Lp3uwdpJL-e1530252812587.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"352\" height=\"320\" \/>For all the subtlety and intricacy of the group\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s interaction, their music commands attention because of sheer musicianship and their ability to apply rhythmic muscle without losing the chamber-music character of their work. In their most recent album, <em>Destinations<\/em>, their approach to \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Solar\u00e2\u20ac\u009d by Miles Davis (or Chuck Wayne, if you prefer)* is a perfect example of Scenes\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 duality\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthe abstraction created in Stowell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s guitar solo melding into the undercurrent of swing generated by Johnson and Bishop. The principle applies firmly in another standby, Schwartz and Dietz\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153You And The Night And The Music,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d as it does in originals by the musicians. Johnson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s loose, loping \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Long Prairie\u00e2\u20ac\u009d follows Stowell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s opening \u00e2\u20ac\u0153The Mandy Walk,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with its hints of the melody of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Everything Happens To Me.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Stowell wrote five of the album\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ten pieces, including \u00e2\u20ac\u0153F\u00c3\u00bcr Heide,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in which he intersperses occasional chords in a gripping solo made primarily of single-note lines. Johnson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s powerful bowing dominates his \u00e2\u20ac\u0153T.I.O.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Throughout that track Bishop manages to sound like two drummers, one using resonant tom-toms, the other, cymbals.<\/p>\n<p>Scenes continues as one of the 21st Century\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s most consistently interesting small bands.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><em>*(Footnote on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Solar:\u00e2\u20ac\u009d In the fifties, guitarist Wayne wrote a piece called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sonny\u00e2\u20ac\u009d for trumpeter Sonny Berman.
