{"id":9577,"date":"2018-05-20T17:21:51","date_gmt":"2018-05-21T00:21:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/?p=9577"},"modified":"2018-05-20T19:43:07","modified_gmt":"2018-05-21T02:43:07","slug":"weekend-extra-zeitlin-williams-and-wilson-together-again","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/2018\/05\/weekend-extra-zeitlin-williams-and-wilson-together-again\/","title":{"rendered":"Weekend Extra: Zeitlin, Williams and Wilson Together Again"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Denny Zeitlin<\/strong>, <em><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2IvkOKF\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wishing On The Moon, Live At Dizzy\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Club Coca Cola In New York City<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-9578\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/51cjgZC6dgL._SS500-e1526861530420.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"220\" height=\"220\" \/>Pianist Zeitlin has recorded three albums with bassist Buster Williams and drummer Matt Wilson, beginning in 2001 with <em>Stairway To The Stars<\/em>, then the adventurous <em>Slickrock<\/em> in 2003 and <em>In Concert<\/em>, in 2009. <em>Wishing On The Moon<\/em>, recorded earlier but just released, revisits several items that Zeitlin has recorded before, including \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Slickrock.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Inspired by his and his wife\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s mountain-biking adventures, Zeitlin expands the piece into a four-part suite that conjures up the sport\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s peaceful setting in the sandstone reaches of Utah\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Moab region and the thrills it gives the cyclists who ride there.<\/p>\n<p>Despite their not working regularly as a group and long stretches between gigs, the music here indicates the trio\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s increased rapport in terms of close listening, balance and reaction to one another\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s stimuli. They revisit pieces like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153All Of You,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Put Your Little Foot Right Out\u00e2\u20ac\u009d with the same sense of discovery as in \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Wishing On The Moon\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201da lyrical new Zeitlin ballad\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand their smoking explorations of David Friesen\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Signs &amp; Wonders\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and Zeitlin\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153There And Back.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Zeitlin, Williams and Wilson have tightness and togetherness that could lead a listener to assume that they play together every night. This is an important addition to the account of their achievement. We don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t often enough give credit to soundmeisters, but in this case recording by Jeff Jones, and mixing and mastering by Vadim Canby, deserve recognition.
