As we all ease back into our post-holiday routines, let&#8217;s once again enjoy a double visit to one of the great small groups in modern jazz. When this post first &#8221;\u00a0ran last year, it was titled:<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><strong>The Milt Jackson Quartet Then And Then<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A video of The Modern Jazz Quartet has been getting wide viewership on the internet. The <em>YouTube<\/em> presentation does not disclose that the group we see and hear is the MJQ\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s predecessor, the rhythm section of Dizzy Gillespie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s big band from 1946 to the early fifties. To give his brass section rests during concerts, Gillespie occasionally featured interludes <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7561\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Milt-Jackson.jpg\" alt=\"Milt Jackson\" width=\"270\" height=\"188\" \/>with vibraharpist Milt Jackson, pianist John Lewis, bassist Ray Brown and drummer Kenny Clarke. They first recorded as an entity in 1951 as the Milt Jackson Quartet. After Percy Heath replaced Brown the following year the group changed its name to The Modern Jazz Quartet. When Clarke concentrated on freelancing around New York in 1955 and then moved to Paris, Connie Kay assumed the drum chair.<\/p>\n<p>The group we see and hear in the video is the Milt Jackson Quartet reunited. History aside, the music is what matters. The four old friends are clearly delighted to be together, and something is amusing them during their performance of Thelonious Monk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u2122Round Midnight.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The brief onscreen title in German near the beginning translates as \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jazz in a Christmas Night.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d <em>YouTube<\/em> provides no information about where the concert was, or when. From the musicians\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 appearances, my guess is that this was the 1990s. <em>YouTube<\/em> identifies the drummer as Kay, but it&#8217;s Clarke.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mRmFvoefvzE?rel=0\" width=\"480\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Here are Jackson, Lewis, Brown and Clarke forty years or so earlier, on August 24, 1951, with Jackson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s &#8220;Milt Meets Sid,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d originally released on Gillespie\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Dee Gee label.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/p6fuq7DV6Og?rel=0\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">That performance and 22 other early Dee Gee and Savoy recordings by Jackson are in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Early-Modern-Milt-Jackson\/dp\/B000066ATH\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;keywords=Milt%20Jackson%20Early%20Modern&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;qid=1464665872&amp;s=music&amp;sr=1-1&amp;tag=rifftidougram-20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">this album<\/a>, some with guest artists including Kenny Dorham, Roy Haynes, Walter Benton and Julius Watkins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Once in a while, Rifftides indulges in a rerun.
