Evidence of that excellence\u00e2\u20ac\u201dif further evidence was <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-8585\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/08\/Emil-Viklicky-2017.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"250\" height=\"238\" \/>needed\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsurfaced this summer in Prague when visiting American trumpeters Marcus Printup and Greg Gisbert sat in with pianist Emil Viklick\u00c3\u00bd (pictured) and his quartet of fellow Czechs. Printup and Gisbert were on tour with Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra. They combined with Viklick\u00c3\u00bd, trumpeter Miroslav Hloucal, bassist Petr Dvorsky and drummer Jirka Stivin, Jr. We have two pieces from their impromptu encounter at Prague\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Reduta jazz club. The first in what Viklick\u00c3\u00bd calls a \u00e2\u20ac\u0153trumpet summit\u00e2\u20ac\u009d is Herbie Hancock\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Dolphin Dance.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/bokhNsJm-_U\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hilarity and trumpetly brotherhood broke out in a romp through the harmonic structure of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Sweet Georgia Brown,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d sparked by Viklick\u00c3\u00bd\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s riff-like introduction.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2rtJ2bBkAnA\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In a message, Viklick\u00c3\u00bd adds,<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In June 20, 2017 Wynton and Marcus walked into Reduta and joined my quartet on stage. (<em>Unfortunately, we don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t have video of that\u00e2\u20ac\u201dDR<\/em>.) Wynton asked me to join the whole band in Dvorak Hall, Rudolfinum, the next day to play Monk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Raised Four.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He also asked me to write for the band new music inspired by Czech composers Dvorak and Janacek. Czechoslovakia was born on Oct 28th, 1918, so there will be the 100 years anniversary next year.
