Let\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s settle (ha) for this one. She played well with others.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qUyLdaCftNQ\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Ms. Fitzgerald and I first met, more or less, when Norman Granz invited me backstage&#8221;\u00a0during intermission at a Jazz At The Philharmonic concert in<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/04\/Buddy-Rich-laughing.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"175\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-8344\" \/> Seattle long ago. She was sitting in a kind of alcove, knitting. As we began chatting, Buddy Rich materialized and began teasing her, moving toward her, then back, gliding in and out with fluid drummer dance moves. \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ella,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d he kept saying, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ella&#8230;Ella&#8230;Ella\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6\u00e2\u20ac\u009d, changing inflections, grinning.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u00e2\u20ac\u0153Oh, Buddy,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d she said repeatedly, smiling and shaking her head. Eventually she said, \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Run along now.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d He didn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t until it was time to go back to work onstage. Then he ran along, leaving Ella smiling, still shaking her head.
