Koester, the founder of Delmark Records and the Jazz Record Mart, has for decades kept a close ear on rising young Chicago players. His choice of Outset for the opening of Bob\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Blues &amp; Jazz Mart indicated faith in the band\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s achievement and potential. This album substantiates both. Outset\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s instrumentation of saxophone, trumpet, bass and drums recalls the influential quartets of Gerry Mulligan and Ornette Coleman. With adventurousness approaching iconoclasm, Outset leans more toward Coleman than Mulligan, but its personality is its own, even in a trademark piece like Thelonious Monk\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Epistrophy.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Interaction and empathy among Meinhardt, the impressive young trumpeter Justin Copeland, bassist Tim Ipsen and drummer Andrew Green keep the proceedings interesting. In addition, Meinhardt\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s pieces\u00e2\u20ac\u201damong them the ballad-like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153New Rain,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d the quixotic \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Bixotic\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and a blues called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Wayneish\u00e2\u20ac\u009d\u00e2\u20ac\u201dsuggest a composer of substance.
