In no small part that is because of the support of the undersung American bassist <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Of-Mystery-and-Beauty-cover.jpg\" alt=\"Of Mystery and Beauty cover\" width=\"250\" height=\"250\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7535\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Of-Mystery-and-Beauty-cover.jpg 250w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Of-Mystery-and-Beauty-cover-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Of-Mystery-and-Beauty-cover-100x100.jpg 100w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/05\/Of-Mystery-and-Beauty-cover-200x200.jpg 200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 250px) 100vw, 250px\" \/>John Goldsby and the young veteran German pianist Ranier B\u00c3\u00b6hm. Strassmayer has absorbed, internalized and personalized what John Coltrane gave to jazz and often evokes him purely on the power of her tone and inflection. The subtlety of Mondlak\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s drumming is epitomized in his unaccompanied feature \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Cascades.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Pauses and silences are among the attributes of that four-minute work of the imagination, made all the more effective by Mondlak&#8217;s upwellings of contrasting intensity.
