The John Coltrane Quartet played it on Ralph Gleason&#8217;s <em>Jazz Casual<\/em> telecast in 1963.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div style=\"text-align: center;\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/saN1BwlxJxA?rel=0\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><em>John Coltrane, tenor saxophone, composer; McCoy Tyner, piano; Jimmy Garrison, bass; Elvin Jones, drums.<\/em><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Coltrane made the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Live-at-Birdland-John-Coltrane\/dp\/B000003N8O\/?_encoding=UTF8&amp;camp=1789&amp;creative=9325&amp;linkCode=ur2&amp;tag=rifftidougram-20\" target=\"_blank\">initial recording<\/a> of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Alabama\u00e2\u20ac\u009d on November 19, 1963, two months following the white supremacist bombing of the 16th Street Baptist church in Birmingham. Four girls\u00e2\u20ac\u201dthree of them 14 years old, one 11\u00e2\u20ac\u201ddied in the blast, leading King to wire Alabama Governor George Wallace,<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u00a6the blood of four little children &#8230; is on your hands. Your irresponsible and misguided actions have created in Birmingham and Alabama the atmosphere that has induced continued violence and now murder.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It was a crucial event in the movement for federal civil rights legislation, which passed in 1964.
