We noted that there would be exceptions.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-7175\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/12\/John-Lewis-smiling.jpg\" alt=\"John Lewis smiling\" width=\"210\" height=\"224\" \/>Today\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s exception is \u00e2\u20ac\u0153England\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Carol,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d John Lewis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s orchestral variations on the traditional English Carol \u00e2\u20ac\u0153God Bless Ye Merry, Gentlemen.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Lewis (pictured) and the Modern Jazz Quartet included the piece in their repertoire, and he expanded on it in his 1958 <em>European Windows<\/em> album with members of the Stuttgart Symphony. Percy Health and Connie Kay, the MJQ\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s bassist and drummer, played on the date. As soloists for the piece, Lewis chose the English baritone saxophonist Ronnie Ross and the Czech flutist Gerald Weinkopf. Your responses to this in previous Christmas seasons made us think that perhaps you would enjoy hearing it again.<\/p>\n<div align=\"center\">\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/47gJz0HRknE?rel=0\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><em>European Windows<\/em> exists in a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/European-Windows-John-Lewis\/dp\/B002PLAL60\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\">CD reissue<\/a> that also contains Lewis\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s ensemble writing in another classic album, <em>The Modern Jazz Society Presents A Concert of Contemporary Music<\/em>. Soloists include J.J.
