See the October 11 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/2015\/10\/don-cheadles-miles-davis-biopic.html\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Rifftides<\/em> post<\/a> about Don Cheadle as Miles Davis. The latest entry in the category is <em>Born To Be Blue<\/em>, which was screened  yesterday and today in special presentations at the Toronto Film Festival. Ethan Hawke plays Chet Baker or&#8212;as <em>Variety\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s<\/em> Andrew Barker writes in his review&#8212;<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u00e2\u20ac\u0153a character who happens to share a name and a significant number of biographical similarities with Chet Baker, taking the legendary West Coast jazz musician\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s life as though it were merely a chord chart from which to launch an improvised set of new melodies.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In an earlier era, cornetists Bix Beiderbecke (<em>Young Man With a Horn<\/em>, 1950) and Red Nichols (<em>The Five Pennies<\/em>, 1959) were honored, if that\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s the appropriate term, with portrayals that also altered biographical facts to satisfy artistic license. In this teaser scene, Hawke as Baker plays for a couple of record industry suits. <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2eonpv21rM8?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><p>Hawke reportedly spent six months learning to play the trumpet as he prepared for the role.  Pre-release publicity for the movie does not say who plays in that scene but, clearly, the sound track is dubbed from the only recording I know in which Baker plays \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Over The Rainbow.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d It picks up on the second eight bars of his solo. <\/p>\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"540\" height=\"360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/qsnJzyHnq9w?rel=0\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p><p>Chet Baker in Rome in 1962 with Amadeo Tomassi, piano; Benoit Quersin, bass; and Daniel Humair, drums, from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Chet-Is-Back-Baker\/dp\/B00008VGMX\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Chet Is Back!<\/em><\/a>.
