They started coming not long after George and Ira Gershwin (pictured) wrote the song for the 1930 Broadway musical <em>Girl Crazy<\/em>. Sidney Bechet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Shag\u00e2\u20ac\u009d materialized in 1932, and earlier than that there may have been \u00e2\u20ac\u0153IGR\u00e2\u20ac\u009d contrafacts&#8212;as such chordal derivatives are known. Bebop thrived on them. Fats Navarro, for instance, wrote one called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Eb Pob\u00e2\u20ac\u009d (spell the words backward). Charlie Parker wrote \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Steeplechase,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Bud Powell \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Wail,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Sonny Rollins \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Oleo.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d The list goes on. And on. And on. Chances are that at this very moment, somebody is writing another one.<\/p>\n<p>In the improbable event that you don\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t remember how the original song goes, guitarist John Pizzarelli and his bassist brother Martin performed it a few years ago on a Ramsey Lewis television show.
