He paints a bleaker picture than the conventional wisdom that Powell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s European exile was a happy period. Concocted racial euphemisms like \u00e2\u20ac\u0153afram\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153euram\u00e2\u20ac\u009d are distractions, as is banishment of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153the\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in the names of things. Descriptions of Powell\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s music making are likely to send the reader to the CD shelves or <em>YouTube<\/em> to hear the brilliance of the pianist\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s inventions. Pullman delivers invaluable information about a great artist.
