Here, she sets it aside in favor of its relative the alto flute. Pitched in G, the alto is capable of bewitching resonance and dynamic presence at the low end of its range. Ms. Hofmann takes full advantage of those qualities in a collection that tends toward romanticism tinged with a bluesy, minor sensibility. Her collaborators are pianist Mike Wofford, bassist John Clayton, guitarist Anthony Wilson and drummer Jeff Hamilton. Wilson\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s composition \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Jack of Hearts\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and Clayton\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Touch The Fog\u00e2\u20ac\u009d are highlights. Ms. Hofmann\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s deceptively simple-sounding \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Lumi\u00c3\u00a8re de la Vie,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d in four time signatures; and Pat Metheny\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s modern classic \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Farmer\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Trust\u00e2\u20ac\u009d linger in the mind.
