Monday will see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/labor-day.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/labor-day.jpg\" alt=\"labor-day\" width=\"200\" height=\"266\" class=\"alignright size-full wp-image-6013\" \/><\/a>official observance of the day established in Canada in 1872 and the US in 1887 to honor the economic and social contributions of working people. It long ago expanded to a three-day holiday weekend that marks the unofficial end of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/LD_sale_HP.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/LD_sale_HP.jpg\" alt=\"LD_sale_HP\" width=\"200\" height=\"200\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-6014\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/LD_sale_HP.jpg 200w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/LD_sale_HP-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/08\/LD_sale_HP-100x100.jpg 100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a>summer, the return of children to school and huge sales at department stores, automobile dealerships and sellers of  electronics. Millions of Americans celebrate Labor Day by grilling and consuming pieces of meat marinated in or covered with barbecue sauce. <\/p>\n<p>So, what could be more appropriate than to honor the laboring classes with two versions of Lil Hardin Armstrong\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s classic composition. The first, from 1927 is by the man she was married to at the time and his Hot Five.
