Here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s what I wrote about &#8220;Bea&#8217;s Flat&#8221; in the notes for Mosaic\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s box set <em>The Complete Pacific Jazz Studio Recordings Of The Chet Baker Quartet With Russ Freeman<\/em> (out of print). <\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A book of transcriptions of Baker\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s solos on \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Band Aid,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153No Ties,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Maid in Mexico\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and several other Freeman pieces was published not long after the original 10-inch Pacific Jazz LPs hit the market. Like hundreds of other aspiring trumpet players, I had a crack at them. I was able to make my way, laboriously, through most of the music, but \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Bea\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Flat\u00e2\u20ac\u009d destroyed me. \u00e2\u20ac\u02dcWe strongly urge you in your studies of these works,\u00e2\u20ac\u2122 the publisher wrote in the forward, \u00e2\u20ac\u2122 to play with the records in order to duplicate the nuances of Chet\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s artistry. \u00e2\u20ac\u2122 Nuances; hell, I couldn\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t get the melody line right, let alone the solo. Not at that tempo. Nice present. But I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122ve still never been able to play the line at that speed.
