{"id":559,"date":"2006-07-15T01:05:00","date_gmt":"2006-07-15T08:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/?p=559"},"modified":"2006-07-15T01:05:00","modified_gmt":"2006-07-15T08:05:00","slug":"readers_choices_part_3","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/2006\/07\/readers_choices_part_3\/","title":{"rendered":"Readers&#8217; Choices, Part 3"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Here is the third report on the survey of what <em>Rifftides<\/em> readers are listening to these days.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u00b7Today I have two CDs in my car player: A lovely duo recording by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0009MAPRW%2Fqid%3D1152835324%2Fsr%3D1-8%2Fref%3Dsr_1_8%3Fs%3Dmusic%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D5174\"target=\"_blank\">Randy Sandke and Dick Hyman<\/a>, and a CD reissue of one of my favorite LPs, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB000002I7V%2Fqid%3D1152835452%2Fsr%3D1-1%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Fs%3Dmusic%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D5174\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Boss of the Blues<\/em><\/a>, with Joe Turner and a dynamite studio band arranged by Ernie Wilkins.<br \/>\nBill Crow<br \/>\nNew City, New York, USA<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u00b7I&#8217;m currently knocked out by a net recording from website <a href=\"http:\/\/www.dimeadozen.org\/\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Dimeadozen<\/em><\/a> from Vienna&#8217;s Opera House in June 2006 of Sergio Mendes current band. How he has manged to update his sound after 40 years amazes me. The Austrian audience is grooving, just shows how Brazilian music can get to the most staid (assumed) audience.<br \/>\n<br \/>I&#8217;ve also just discovered Duke&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mosaicrecords.com\/prodinfo.asp?number=1001\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Cosmic Scene<\/em><\/a>, great stuff, Gonzalves and Terry are sublime.<br \/>\n<br \/>Plus a lovely record by Italian pianist Enrico Pieranunzi <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/gp\/redirect.html?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;location=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB000654YGU%2Fqid%3D1152913564%2Fsr%3D1-1%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3Fs%3Dmusic%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D5174\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Fellini Jazz<\/em><\/a> with Chris Potter, Kenny Wheeler, Charlie Haden and Paul Motian. Lovely stuff from all concerned with some exquisite themes.<br \/>\nDon Emanuel<br \/>\nKent, England<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;\u00b7I have been utilizing my aging El Camino recently. Its tape deck won&#8217;t play bebop. That said, I&#8217;ve been listening to a home-made compilation of Benny Goodman material from the 1940&#8217;s Columbia era, with the likes of Mel Powell, Sid Catlett, Vido Musso, Cootie Williams, Billy Butterfield, Dave Tough, Peggy Lee, Lou McGarrity and those fine Eddie Sauter arrangements such as &#8220;Benny Rides Again,&#8221;  &#8220;Perfidia,&#8221; &#8220;Scatterbrain,&#8221; &#8220;The Man I Love,&#8221; if you will. Indeed, at the end of the day I&#8217;m ready for some Artie Shaw.<br \/>\nR.H.
