Family members confirmed his passing but have not announced the cause of death. A pianist admired for his adaptability and thorough musicianship, Walton wrote tunes that became jazz standards, among them \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Firm Roots,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Bolivia,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Ugetsu,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Midnight Waltz\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Something in Common.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d  My notes for his 2009 CD <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Voices-Deep-Within-Cedar-Walton\/dp\/B002JODUT8\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Voices Deep Within<\/em><\/a> summarize Walton\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s career from the time he was a high school music student in Dallas, Texas.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>It must have been a remarkable school; his band mates included the budding tenor saxophonists David \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Fathead\u00e2\u20ac\u009d Newman and James Clay, and trumpeter Bobby Bradford. Bradford told Kirk Silsbee (in the notes for Cedar\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Seasoned-Wood-Cedar-Walton\/dp\/B0019M82VM\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;keywords=Cedar%20Walton%20Seasoned%20Wood&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;qid=1376959420&#038;s=music&#038;sr=1-1&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Seasoned Wood<\/em><\/a>, High Note HCD 7185) \u00e2\u20ac\u0153\u00e2\u20ac\u201dCedar was way ahead of us\u00e2\u20ac\u201dhe could already play the bop changes that we were learning. He\u00e2\u20ac\u2122d correct us when we weren\u00e2\u20ac\u2122t sure of what we were doing.\u00e2\u20ac\u009d By the time he got out of Army in 1958, Cedar was ready for advanced work in New York. Before the decade ended, he had played with J.J. Johnson, Gigi Gryce and the Art Farmer-Benny Golson Jazztet. In the early sixties he became a regular on the recording scene and a member of Art Blakey\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Jazz Messengers in the edition that included Wayne Shorter and Freddie Hubbard. His work with Blakey established him as a pianist and composer of dependability, inventiveness and versatility. He has occupied the top ranks of both categories ever since.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>From my notes for <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Breakthrough-Walton\/dp\/B0000AOV4T\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;keywords=Cedar%20Walton%20Breakthrough&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;qid=1376959888&#038;s=music&#038;sr=1-1&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Breakthrough<\/em><\/a>, one of his major mid-career albums by a group that he led with tenor saxophonist Hank Mobley:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>His playing matured with Blakey, and his composing skills found a ready outlet. The Messengers recorded several of Cedar\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s tunes. Walton\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s style is rooted squarely in the bop tradition but, as is eloquently evident on this record, he has grown dramatically since the early days when he was essentially a Bud Powell disciple.
