They put on a benefit for the blind every year. He asked me if I could get some people to appear.<\/p>\n<p>George Shearing was in San Francisco, so I asked him. His reply, as expected, was a direct yes. He played a few numbers with his trio and then announced to the audience that he had taken the liberty to bring a friend. At that point they played an intro and from the wings came, &#8220;Did you say you have a lot to learn?&#8221; followed by you know who.<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/shearing-williams.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/shearing-williams.jpeg\" alt=\"shearing, williams\" width=\"370\" height=\"266\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-4746\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/shearing-williams.jpeg 370w, https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/05\/shearing-williams-300x215.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 370px) 100vw, 370px\" \/><\/a><br \/>\nThe audience reaction was wonderful.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>No doubt, especially if You Know Who sang as he did in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Heart-Soul-George-Shearing\/dp\/B00005Q6UL\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;keywords=The%20Heart%20And%20Soul%20of%20George%20Shearing%20and%20Joe%20Williams&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;qid=1368237768&#038;s=music&#038;sr=1-1&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\"><em>the album they made together<\/em><\/a> for Shearing\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Sheba label in 1971, and if Shearing dug into his store of harmonic knowledge as he does in this medley.
