I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m getting back into some kind of routine, if not yet what could be called a groove. Before that happens, I\u00e2\u20ac\u2122m hitting the road again to spend a bit of time with my brother, who is less than well. In the meantime, here\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s a followup to a post that attracted considerable comment. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/2012\/11\/paul-desmond-take-88.html\"target=\"_blank\">The item<\/a> about Paul Desmond\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s 88th birthday included a link to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Piano-blues.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.artsjournal.com\/rifftides\/wp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/12\/Piano-blues.jpg\" alt=\"\" title=\"Piano blues\" width=\"110\" height=\"157\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-4271\" \/><\/a>track called \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Pilgrim\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s Progress\u00e2\u20ac\u009d from a 1956 Dave Brubeck Quartet concert recording. The piece is a close relative of \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Audrey,\u00e2\u20ac\u009d \u00e2\u20ac\u0153Balcony Rock\u00e2\u20ac\u009d and several other DBQ blues performances. <em>Rifftides<\/em> reader and frequent commenter Terence Smith pointed us to a fairly recent Brubeck solo with the same harmonic approach and mood. It\u00e2\u20ac\u2122s from a 2003 Clint Eastwood film called <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Martin-Scorsese-Presents-Blues-Piano\/dp\/B00020X9CO\/?_encoding=UTF8&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;keywords=piano%20blues%20clint%20eastwood&#038;linkCode=ur2&#038;qid=1354429539&#038;sr=8-1&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20\"target=\"_blank\">Piano Blues<\/a> in which Eastwood presents several pianists including Ray Charles, Jay McShann, <\/a>Otis Spann, Pete Jolly and Dr. John, as well as film of Nat Cole, Art Tatum, Duke Ellington and others. In the course of the program, Eastwood sits at the piano to chat with his guests and listens to them play.
