He was lyrical yet never sold out (imagine a Jackie McLean and Strings LP!). How could he with that frantic, sharp, pants-on-fire sound? But he was no pocket Sonny Rollins.<br \/>\nFor my money, the best example of Jackie&#8217;s work and energy level is <em><a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0009VNC9G%2Fsr%3D8-1%2Fqid%3D1144171207%2Fref%3Dsr_1_1%3F%255Fencoding%3DUTF8\"target=\"_blank\">Music From The Connection<\/a><\/em>, with Freddie Redd, Mike Mattos and Larry Ritchie. The sad yet hopeful  quality of Jackie&#8217;s lines on that date are staggering. Each song is hummable and loaded with soaring runs, not only by Mack but also Freddie Redd. Makes you wonder why the pair didn&#8217;t record again and again.<br \/>\nInterestingly, this was the East Coast version of <em>The Connection<\/em>. The West Coast version featured songs  written and played by Dexter Gordon, some of which pop up on <a href=\"http:\/\/www.amazon.com\/exec\/obidos\/redirect?link_code=ur2&#038;tag=rifftidougram-20&#038;camp=1789&#038;creative=9325&#038;path=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.amazon.com%2Fgp%2Fproduct%2FB0002A2VJG%2Fqid%3D1144171761%2Fsr%3D2-1%2Fref%3Dpd_bbs_b_2_1%3Fs%3Dmusic%26v%3Dglance%26n%3D5174\"target=\"_blank\"><em>Dexter Calling<\/em><\/a> on Blue Note. I think it&#8217;s fair to say Mack topped Dex hands down\u00e2\u20ac\u201dand that&#8217;s saying something.
